About Our studio

10 minute walk from Kitakamakura station, climbing deeper into the narrow path from the approach to Jochiji Temple, you will find a small old Japanese folk house standing alone in a land larger than 1 acre.  The land, which appeared to have been cultivated during the Kamakura Era (1185-1333), is in a valley surrounded by eroded hills.  It is a unique land with an old ceramic wood kiln and a deep well.  Making use of this place that is very Kamakura, a place where you can feel her history and culture, the owner of this small wooded garden which we now call “Takara no niwa – garden of treasures,” expressed the wish to create this place as a source of Kamakura’s culture, art, and life style.  Like-minded potters active in the area gathered together and renovated the old kiln house, which used to be a professional potter’s studio back in 1930s to 1960s.  Slowly renovating and organizing the space from the fall of 2010, after a half year, we opened “Takara no kama – Takara Clay Studio,” a ceramic workshop where anybody can enjoy pottery trial lessons.

At Takara Clay Studio, we offer a variety of ceramic lessons and workshops from casual 1-2 hour handbuilding classes for any skill level students to more full-scale advanced workshops designed by our unique instructors.  Our wood kiln is also fired few times every year.  If you have a wish, you can join the firing as well.  The studio is located only 1.5 hours from the central Tokyo.

We invite you to join us and create your one-of-a-kind vessel at Takara Clay Studio, a small pottery studio with a traditional wood fired kiln, enjoying the scenery rich of nature in the wooded valley.
